A festival is one week. A filmmaker's career is not.
Nukhufest uses a New York theatrical festival as one part of a longer system built around independent film.
The festival connects theatrical exhibition, streaming distribution, professional jury recognition, audience discovery, creator participation, community, and support for what filmmakers create next.
For press, the larger story is not simply which films are screening. It is what happens when pieces of the independent film ecosystem that are usually fragmented begin operating as one connected pathway.
Nukhufest began in 2015.

Nukhu operates throughout the year as an independent film platform for distribution, discovery, audience building, community, and creator participation.
Nukhufest is the annual festival built inside that larger ecosystem. In 2027, films can enter through a theatrical-first path or a streaming-first path.
Grand Jury Competition
Selected films screen at Cinema Village during Nukhufest and are evaluated independently by a professional Grand Jury. The 2027 Grand Jury Prize is announced July 29.
Grand Jury applicants are also considered for Nukhufest Official Selection, so filmmakers do not need to make a second streaming submission.
Nukhufest Official Selection
Films can be selected for a Nukhu premiere without requiring theatrical competition. Official Selections can continue reaching audiences digitally beyond festival week.
Eligible films can participate in the cumulative Best Nuvee audience competition, which remains active through the live November 13 finale.
The Grand Jury Prize is professional recognition. Best Nuvee is audience recognition. A film may receive either distinction or both.
The infrastructure is connected. The filmmaker remains independent.
Independent filmmakers are often asked to move through a sequence of disconnected systems: festivals, exhibition, streaming, audience building, distribution, community, marketing, and financing.
Every transition can mean starting again with a new platform, a new audience, a new gatekeeper, and a new set of incentives. Nukhu has spent more than a decade building infrastructure intended to keep those relationships connected under one ecosystem.
Nukhu is built by filmmakers and artists. Creators can participate in the parts of the ecosystem that are useful to them while retaining ownership of their work and continuing to pursue opportunities beyond Nukhu.

Nukhufest brings filmmakers and audiences together physically in New York while Nukhu allows participating films to continue reaching viewers through web and television applications after the theatrical experience.
The goal is not to choose between physical cinema and digital distribution. It is to create a system where each can strengthen the other.
Approved press credentials are complimentary, individually issued, non-transferable, subject to verification and program capacity, and intended for working media covering Nukhufest.
The story is not another film festival. It is the system around the films.
Independent film has no shortage of festivals, platforms, communities, grants, markets, distributors, and service providers. The problem is that filmmakers are usually expected to move between them as separate worlds.
Fragmentation costs filmmakers momentum.
A filmmaker may build attention at a festival, lose that audience when the event ends, rebuild from zero for a digital release, then repeat the process again for distribution, exhibition, marketing, and financing.
Nukhufest is built around continuity. A theatrical screening can become part of a longer relationship between the film, the filmmaker, the audience, and the infrastructure around the work.
Festival attention is valuable, but temporary.
Traditional festival recognition can create an important moment for a film without solving what happens to that work after the screening, the review, or the award.
Nukhu is designed around the period that follows. Films can continue reaching audiences, participating in community, generating eligible viewing revenue, building demand, and creating opportunities beyond a single festival week.
Global discovery and physical cinema do not have to compete.
Digital reach can connect independent films with viewers beyond one city, while theatrical exhibition can create the concentration, conversation, and shared experience that makes cinema culturally meaningful.
Nukhufest treats those experiences as complementary rather than mutually exclusive. The New York festival creates a physical center while Nukhu allows discovery to continue beyond the room.
Connecting infrastructure should not require centralizing creative power.
Consolidation in media often means that more infrastructure is controlled by fewer decision-makers while artists lose leverage.
Nukhu takes a different approach. The goal is to connect infrastructure while allowing filmmakers to retain ownership, participate non-exclusively, and use the parts of the system that support their individual goals.
The differentiator is not one feature. It is the decision to connect functions that independent filmmakers are usually asked to navigate separately.

Before you apply.
When are press applications reviewed? +
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Some credentials may remain pending until program capacity, press allocations, and final event logistics are confirmed.
Does one credential guarantee access to the entire festival? +
No. Approved credentials are intended to provide broad Nukhufest press access, but individual screenings, interviews, photography requests, equipment use, and limited-capacity programs may require advance confirmation. All access remains subject to capacity and festival policy.
Can I request interviews before festival week? +
Yes. Press may request interviews with festival leadership, participating filmmakers, jurors, panelists, moderators, guests, and other relevant participants. Availability is not guaranteed, but the Nukhufest team can assist with coordination.
Can I request film screeners? +
Select screeners may be provided to verified press when authorized by the filmmaker or rights holder. Include the films, filmmakers, or subjects you are interested in covering in your credential application or press request.
Can I photograph or record inside Cinema Village? +
Photography, video recording, on-camera interviews, and equipment use may require advance approval. Applicants should disclose planned equipment and intended coverage in the press application.
Can I bring a guest or additional crew member? +
Press credentials are individually issued and do not automatically include a guest. Additional journalists, photographers, producers, or crew members should submit their own applications when accreditation is required.
Is the November 13 Awards Ball included? +
Awards Ball press access is subject to separate capacity and event logistics. Applicants may indicate their interest in covering the November 13 finale when applying, but accreditation for the theatrical festival does not by itself guarantee Awards Ball admission.
Can I cover Nukhu outside Nukhufest season? +
Yes. Nukhu releases films and develops programs throughout the year. Press can contact the team about upcoming digital premieres, filmmakers available for interviews, platform developments, partnerships, community activity, or other potential stories at any time.
What happens if my credential is not approved? +
Public Nukhufest tickets may still be purchased through the festival schedule, subject to availability. Media may also contact the press team about interviews, materials, or coverage opportunities that do not require physical festival accreditation.
