Nukhufest 2027 Opens Submissions With Two Paths From Film Festival to Streaming Distribution
The 12th annual festival returns to Cinema Village in New York City July 23 to 29, introducing separate theatrical and streaming competitions, audience-powered awards, and a pathway to digital distribution on Nukhu.
NEW YORK, NY, October 21, 2026: The Nukhu Foundation has opened submissions for Nukhufest 2027, the 12th annual edition of its independent film festival, introducing two submission paths designed to connect theatrical exhibition with streaming distribution, audience engagement, and continued filmmaker support.
Nukhufest returns to Cinema Village in Manhattan from July 23 through July 29, 2027, with seven days of independent film screenings and planned filmmaker conversations, workshops, and community programs. The festival's Grand Jury Prize will be announced July 29, while the audience-powered Best Nuvee competition will continue through November 13, culminating at the Nukhufest Awards Ball in New York City.
Presented by the Nukhu Foundation and powered by Nukhu.com, the 2027 festival introduces Theatrical First and Streaming First, two distinct ways for filmmakers to participate based on their release strategies.
"Independent filmmakers have more ways than ever to distribute their films, but finding an audience remains one of their greatest challenges," said Sanjay Singh, Nukhufest founder and festival director. "We created these two paths because filmmakers shouldn't have to choose between pursuing festival recognition and building a future for their work. Our goal is to connect theatrical exhibition, streaming, community, and opportunities to make the next film."
Two Submission Paths, One Filmmaking Ecosystem
Theatrical First | Grand Jury Competition
Theatrical First is intended for recent films still pursuing festival screenings and theatrical exhibition.
Films completed in 2025 or later that are not currently available for unrestricted public online viewing may apply for consideration. Previous festival screenings are permitted, and a New York City premiere is not required.
Selected films will screen at Cinema Village during Nukhufest, July 23 to 29, 2027, and compete for the Grand Jury Prize, selected by an independent professional jury.
Grand Jury Competition selections also receive a defined pathway to digital distribution on Nukhu following their theatrical participation. Filmmakers may release immediately after Nukhufest or delay their online release for up to 365 days to accommodate further festival opportunities and applicable premiere requirements.
Every Grand Jury application also receives consideration for Nukhufest's streaming selection without an additional submission fee.
Streaming First | Best Nuvee
Streaming First is designed for filmmakers ready to bring their completed work directly to digital audiences, including those who have finished their festival circuits.
Films of any completion year, genre, or duration may be considered, including those with previous theatrical exhibitions or online releases.
Accepted filmmakers complete the required Nukhu activation and non-exclusive licensing process before their films become available for streaming.
Filmmakers retain ownership of their films, set their own viewing prices, and receive 50 percent of eligible title purchase revenue.
Eligible films activated by September 12, 2027, can compete for Best Nuvee, Nukhufest's annual audience-selected award.
Audience voting continues throughout the competition and closes live at the November 13 Awards Ball. The final Top 10 are recognized as Nukhufest Finalists, and the highest-ranked film receives Best Nuvee and the Nukhu Foundation's Development-to-Distribution Grant, beginning at $3,000, to support the filmmaker's next project.

A Festival Connected to Distribution and Community
Nukhufest's expanded model reflects Nukhu's broader effort to bring independent film resources together rather than leaving filmmakers to navigate disconnected systems for exhibition, distribution, marketing, and financing.
Films released on Nukhu, known as Nuvees, can be viewed through the company's web platform and supported television streaming apps.
The Nuvee Club extends that experience through a community of filmmakers and film fans, while the nonprofit Nukhu Foundation provides grants, mentorship, and educational opportunities for emerging creators.
The 2027 edition follows Nukhufest 2026, which presented seven days of programming at Cinema Village and featured 51 Semi-Finalists representing 20 countries.
The 2026 Best Nuvee was Sorry I'm late (but I brought a choir), directed by Norwegian filmmaker Håkon Anton Olavsen. The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Mac Miller's Balloonerism, directed by Samuel Jerome Mason and produced by Hornet.
"Nukhufest is more than an opportunity to have your film selected," Singh added. "We want filmmakers to find people who care about their work, learn from one another, and build relationships that extend beyond a festival screening. That's what makes community such an important part of independent film distribution."
Singh expands on this approach in a new Nuvee Club editorial, Why You Should Submit Your Film to a Community, Not Just a Festival.
